A powerful and emotional movie. Definitely an Oscar contender for Best Film, Best Screenplay Adaptation, and Best Actress. The movie reveals the hardship and racism faced by the black maids in the 70s. It reminds us of some of the sad realities many maids and workers faced today in modern societies like Hong Kong, Singapore and Saudi. Maids who raised our young, tender our old weren't treated fairly. Many slept in tight corners in some households and deprived of weekend offs. We kept their passports and bank books, monitor their moves, fly them back on the shabbiest and cheapest airlines, reprimand them like lords and slog their lives like slaves. Many of them have children and families of their own back home. For these little money they earned, they sold their lives away from their families, loved ones - just to make our lives better. So, we get to celebrate our own special days - mother's day, father's day etc. They too, are equals like us and deserve our respect and kindness. Many times in Hong Kong, I have seen young kids abusing (shouting and commanding) their maids. I have visited homes where maids sleep inside cupboard spaces (no privacy and poor condition). And in Singapore, many maids weren't given rest days. Not even on Sundays. They may not be our family. But the maids certainly no strangers too. Have compassion on our less fortunate foreign workers.
