Comparison with Man of Steel is inevitable so might as well address the elephant in the room. Superman might flow better as a movie and has a more compelling and interesting villain, with Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor being a pretty nice rendition; but it lacks the grounded animation that makes Superman feels superhuman and cool. This Superman is pretty whiny and plastic.I can start with the positives. I like the opening. I think it’s pretty inventive, and the setting is creative. The opening is solid right until Daily Planet, where we find our leads — with David and Rachel leading as Superman and Lois Lane as the helm of the film. I find them nowhere near as charismatic as Henry and Amy. David is very brash and whiny, with Lois being a bit too old for her character. Their romance is also never properly introduced, the relationship is always glossed over with one-liner jokes, and when they kiss, it feels superficial rather than earned.Filmmaking wise Gunn’s direction is a hit-and-miss, sometimes he directs pretty nice moments: the kiss scene and Mr. Terrific’s insane fight scene; but equally Gunn also directs insanely corny scenes, like the celebration scene in the pod and the final monologues of Superman and Lex Luthor.I also find the dog extremely annoying. You don’t get a pass just because the dog is cute and well animated. I can’t understand why Gunn decides to make it this uncooperative. Every time it is on screen it just makes matter worse. It is very dissatisfying to watch.Overall aesthetically this movie is nowhere near the technical showmanship of Man of Steel, which till this day is still a technical Marvel and beauty to behold. Superman has forced colour grading and film grain that marries very poorly to its overly CGI plastic doll. You can hate on Sydner all you want, but you can’t deny his team does make spellbinding imageries that look insanely epic and cool.Overall, too cartoony and corny to my taste.Verdoct: 77
