It’s crazy how Dan Trachtenberg single-handedly revives the Predator franchise and bring it to the right and entertaining direction. Together with Killer of Killers, the franchise is certified in good hands and I will always come back for more. Even though some people might have problems with the reversal concept: having the Yautja as the hero. Ultimately I think it is a lot more interesting than seeing another human vs Predator film, especially when Prey is already so well done.Trachtenberg’s directorial style is amazing! There are moments where I thought I’m watching Dune. Right from the opening shot, the visuals and soundscape is an absolute treat. This is the reason why watching a popcorn flick in cinema is worth it.Unfortunately, Predator: Badlands is also quite flawed, especially in the story and dialogue department. I feel like the characters aren’t interesting enough to make the journey satisfying, the plot also lack enough surprises to make the viewer in suspense. You can almost always guess what happens next. The climax in particular is a bit lackluster, the first half of the movie, the introduction of the Predatory planet Genna is a lot more interesting the conflict of Weyland-Yutani’s synths.Even though I love the general immersive Predatory world building and anamorphic visuals, I also think most of the combat fight scenes feel lackluster and messy. A lot of the times, it’s CGI muddling in blurry handheld and I couldn’t tell what’s happening. The only interesting fight is an Elle Fanning fight, you will know when you see it.I also think even though the CGI-make up marriage is incredible, the monkey sidekick design is a bit too weird looking. When the monkey appears in the same shot with the Predator, the magic immediately breaks.Overall it’s a fun immersive ride, I just hope the story gets an upgrade next time.Verdict: 79
